Dr. Michael G. McNamara is a Board Certified orthopedic surgeon who has over 20 years of experience treating simple and complex hand, elbow, and shoulder problems. Dr. McNamara graduated from University of Washington Medical School in 1987 and completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1993. In 1994 he completed his Fellowship at the Hand Center of San Antonio and earned his Certification in Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. His specialized training includes hand, elbow, and shoulder surgery as well as trauma, sports medicine, and total elbow and shoulder replacement.
Dr. McNamara was a member of the US Air Force from 1988 to 1999 and served at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage from 1994 to 1999. During his time in Alaska he was the Chief of Orthopedics at Elmendorf from 1997 to 1999. Dr. McNamara then moved to Washington State and continued his surgical practice at The Everett Clinic from 1999 to 2002, serving as Chief of Orthopedics from 2001-2002.
Dr. McNamara and his family returned to Alaska in 2002 where he established his private specialty clinic for surgery of the hand, elbow, and shoulder. He continues to enhance the field of medical research on the upper extremity by developing instruments specialized for the surgical procedures he performs. In February of 2013, Dr. McNamara was awarded his first patent, and since then, he has been awarded a total of 3 patents. Each of these patents help advance the field of scapholunate ligament repair. Dr. McNamara also finds time to enjoy the Alaskan outdoors with his wife Joanne and their three children, Kirsten, Shannon, and Jake. He is an avid small plane pilot and enjoys exploring Alaska from behind the stick of a SuperCub. Dr. McNamara also enjoys photographing his many adventures including hunting, fishing, and skiing with his family and friends. In the past, he has contributed his expertise to many Alaska youth activity programs, such as soccer and ski teams. Dr. McNamara is now regularly leading and participating in mission trips to Guatemala to care for the medical and dental needs of underserved children and families.
